Between them, the studios didn't release a successful action/comic book blockbuster this month.
There wasn't a big Valentine's Day movie either like the 50 Shades movies, The Vow, Valentine's Day... (though maybe this market was shared between WMENW and ISROM).
There wasn't a surprise overperformer like Deadpool, Kingsman, Spongebob 2, Get Out.
Audiences were not excited about the animated sequels on offer.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't make, and studios didn't make as many shots this February - and they also whiffed the lay-ups. (Disney hasn't even released a film in 2019.)
That's why box office was low last month.
If box office was down because controversy was turning off audiences, you'd expect some of those movies released in February to have actually been controversial, but none of them were.
