increasingly so. The demographic future is relatively predictable. Americans are becoming less rural as the backwaters empty; less religious as reason overtakes superstition, especially among young people; less white, for several reasons; less bigoted, because modernity and improvement; and less backward, as the great sifting shifts population to modern, successful, educated communities.

Educated, informed conservatives seem desperate -- enough to embrace Trump -- because they understand that maintaining an electoral coalition for backwardness and intolerance is becoming more difficult in America.  Soon, not even the three pillars of conservative electoral strategy -- gerrymandering, voter suppression, and the structural amplification of yahoo voices in the Electoral College and Senate -- will be enough to make Republicans competitive in national elections. They'll continue to lord over the can't-keep-up stretches -- Mississippi, Wyoming, Alabama, Kentucky, maybe even West Virginia and Idaho -- but to remain politically and culturally relevant in the United States the Republican Party must change or die.

I vote "die."

Either way, the superstitious slack-jaws and half-educated bigots will be replaced.  By better Americans.  Does anyone genuinely believe school prayer is coming back to public schools, gay-bashing will return to mainstream society, abortion will be criminalized, universal health care is not inevitable, creationism will return to science classrooms, Social Security will be terminated, or immigration will be stopped?  Some people were gullible enough to believe that Mexico would pay for a wall, that Hillary would be incarcerated, and that Trump would enable uneducated, unskilled rural white men to prosper at the expense of accomplished, educated residents in "elite" communities, but those people are not America's future.  The Republican Party platform is a handy summary of 'what's not going to happen in America.'

The internet and right-wing media enable malcontents a chance to amplify their voices, but America's young people are not becoming Republicans, right-wingers, or conservatives.

Democrats should not become overconfident, though.  If conservatives perfect a machine that mass-produces tens of millions of half-educated, economically inadequate, superstitious, disaffected, selfish, backward, easily frightened, gun-loving, elderly, rural white males, and the Republican Party figures a way to register such newly minted yahoos to vote, the liberal-libertarian mainstream could have a real problem on its hands.

April Domestic Box Office Down 17 percent from 2018. (Reminder) Feb. box office was lowest in 17 years also. VictorY Apr 19, 16:07

Correction: Feb. box office was lowest in 13 years. Domestic revenue year to date at lowest level since 2013, according to Comscore {nm} VictorY Apr 19, 16:11

I blame the Alita Challenge what huge impact that had on the box office {nm} jamesbik333 Apr 19, 16:24

Wrong, you can't even read. That's year to date, not April, and 2018 had a little movie called Black Panther. {nm} Antibody Apr 19, 16:35

(article) THR cites Comscore for analysis, comparing 2019's through-April totals to similar numbers from 2018's record breaking year. VictorY Apr 19, 16:38

Takes more than just one film to make a frame. BP was amazing, but wasn't everything. {nm} VictorY Apr 19, 16:44

BP made $688,364,917 through April accounting for one fifth of the 2018 box office to date, so yes it's entirely responible for the 17%.. {nm} Antibody Apr 19, 16:58

And yet, domestic revanue is lowest since 2013. Way before BP. (according to Comscore). This isn't working AB. {nm} VictorY Apr 19, 17:12

That's cause 2018 ended poorly. CSStrowbridge Apr 20, 01:29

Yep {nm} Moviesnob Apr 20, 07:31

That number is year to date, not 2018 MS.. I understand you're trying to embarass me with your attempted name calling and overall junk. {nm} VictorY Apr 20, 20:22

But at least try to remember what year we're even talking about.. Oh right, that's you "per usual." {nm} VictorY Apr 20, 20:23

2019 YTD includes box office made from movies released in 2018. RogerMore Apr 21, 08:44

I'm not exactly sure where this "We'll replace all these fans" stragety is really headed. These declines suck. {nm} VictorY Apr 19, 16:40

We’re not replacing all fans. Only bigots, slack-jaws, religious right are to be replaced. Hope this clarification helps {nm} SenJohnBlutarsky Apr 19, 19:49

"If you believe anything that americans believed up until 20 years ago (even just 10 in many cases) then you're being replaced." MattW Apr 20, 00:37

Good. If you can't keep up with a changing culture, then you deserve to be replaced. That's how it has always worked {nm} CSStrowbridge Apr 20, 01:30

I’m not sure that is how it works. McCarthyists didn’t get replaced, for example, they evolved. Within a decade Goldwater was the Republican RogerMore Apr 20, 06:07

Also “America’s founding stock”? That’s not how it works either. {nm} RogerMore Apr 20, 06:08

He's wrong (as usual). No one is trying to "replace" anyone. If anything they are trying to be more inclusive & appeal to a broader audience {nm} Moviesnob Apr 20, 07:40
