I have some sympathy for the theatre chains but their "demands" that movies have to play in theatres first is a bit like

the tail trying to wag the dog.  Or a temper tantrum perhaps.  The theatre chains are (currently) dependant on the studios but the studios are not really dependant on the theatres.  Even with it being under unusual circumstances the example of Trolls 2 shows that.  The studios can make more money working with theatres but they can still make money without them.

There ARE going to be changes in the movie business, business model.  The changes in technology and the wider changes in society that tech changes are a part of both make that inevitable.  The horse buggy whip makers have to learn how to make automobile accessories.
