i think our perception of what is "American" has constantly evolved and is worth challenging e..g, i could have said West Side Story in 1961
and meant it unironically. today, i think its core message is still one of tolerance and pro-Melting Pot but we also can't separate that out from the fact that they cast a Russian Jew (who herself changed her real name to pass as more WASPy for mass audiences) in the lead Puerto Rican role. the act of which -- untintentionally -- give it a secondary American-ness in the context of our complicated history on race
