While I don't think the horror genre is a good comparative for IRNM2 or superhero/SF franchises generally, I checked and was prepared to concede your point. In fact though the trend was lower total box office each time more than it was declining multiples. Certainly towards the end that's true, where Final Box Office over Opening Weekend had a 1.99, 1.89 and back up to 1.96 multiple for the 4th through 6th movies respectively. The first movie had a 3.02 multiple.
The second and third movie did show the drops you'd be looking for (2.74, then 2.34), but that also correlates with drops in the RT percentage and out of 10 score. The increase in the 6th movie multiple also correlates with an increase in those. So again it suggests that multiples correlate more with other factors than just some automatic multiples drop as successive sequels are made.
