(Note how he cleared the chamber. In semi-automatic hand guns you can pull the action back part way to see if there is a round in the chamber without ejecting it and then ease it back to the closed position.)

At the 1:15 to 1:25 section he shows how to check the chamber for a round. "Lock the bolt back to the rear and verify there's nothing in the mag well loading your AR and the chamber."
Same basic procedure applies to almost all semi-automatic rifles.
