If I want (& think it can) to do $1b domestic I'd have gone all out for 2-3 months prior to release. Think DSTR2 + SPID8 & then some!
Am not sure they thought it could. Regular blockbuster promos like 5-6 big movies do each year vs the cultural phenom that was Avatar 13 years ago which can be milked to death but very risky in terms of return if your product doesn't match up. The slow non 3D early bookings are likely a result of that & they're likely ok with that. Just looking to get a return without losing money and be able to put the 2nd sequel in theatres similarly.
