Prediction wise, off to a great start as I predicted Super Mario Bros would make a billion dollars and win Spring. Wahoo!!! (Mario quote, haha).
So without delay, my Summer Pick Five.... My picks for what films will win the Summer box office season.
1. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny:
..James Magold and his team have already delivered the goods with iconic names in Logan and Ford Vs. Ferrari. Now he gets the chance with one of film's "most" iconic brands and he won't dissappoint. Harrison Ford's return as the lead is big here, and cross generational appeal mixed with nostalgia will easily out-perform box office expectations.
2. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning: Part One.
.. One thing is certain, this film will easily post the biggest opening in Mission Impossible franchise history, as early test screenings have "lights out" good. Another factor is Tom Cruise being red hot with Summer audiences after Top Gun Maverick That kind of buzz is absolutely organic to a event Summer film, look for a big run here thru July and up to Labor Day. If Indy stumbles, this film could absolutely win the Summer.
3. Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse.
.. Super hero fatigue is definitely a thing, but this film's fresh take on the Spiderman mythos is catching on big with younger audiences. The animation is also incredible to look at. Pre-sales will be insanely good and I see word of mouth delivering this past many of the Summer favorites for the 3rd spot.
4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
There's a huge advantage being the first big Summer film out the gate, as it allows a solid May run to cash in before others even open. "Fast X" "The Little Mermaid" and such also have a high chance of dropping off big in their second weeks of release. this will leave more May box office numbers for Guardians to seize.
5. The Flash.
.. Ah yes, upset city. This pick will surprise many but while star Ezra Miller's arrest record will no doubt play a factor here- there's also considerable buzz around this film as being one of the best super-hero films for the year. Michael Keaton's return as Batman also boosts this film considerably with fan audiences. Look for a suprise top five finish here over other potential fav's like Transformers and Little Mermaid.
Other notes:
Barbie has a great chance to deliver for comedic audiences, since comedy films are so rare nowadays.
On the Oscar end, no doubt look no further than Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer for solid Oscar buzz....
Have a great Summer.. HSXers....
Don't forget to enter the Summer Pick 7 contest and go for the Gold....
