No, but just because box office is good doesnt mean netflix suffers. its more complicated & netflix can benefit if theatrical is up or down

and the opposite is true for theaters and the studios - they need theatrical to work. Netflix bet correctly twice - that they needed to be 100% free of studio licensing (by making their own movies and licensing exclusive rights to non studio movies)- and then that studios wouldn't be able to make their own streaming platforms successful on their own (or wouldnt even try hello sony) so studios would have to come back to netflix and license their movies to them (at a lower rate than before). This is a long long story. It actually goes back to when Starz licensed Sony and Disney content to Netflix via their pay tv deals for $20m (true story, I worked for a Starz subsidiary - Anchor Bay - at the time and Starz thought they hit the jackpot back then). thats when things changed for the worse and honestly would be great if we could go back to those days (when studios licensed these rights to either Starz or Showtime or HBO) and these rights weren't available to consumers until after a year from theatrical. Fox would still be around!Ā

NYTIMES: Dan Lin: Filmmakers who insist on theatrical releases "will be shown the door" Narnia was an exception. notfabio Jun 05, 11:05

Heh, they've already had to revise the article over the Cliff Booth title not being official {nm} notfabio Jun 05, 11:12

Netflix, the DVDs by mail company whose streaming slogan forever was "No Ads. Ever"? {nm} sir richfield Jun 05, 11:42

*looks at Project Hail Mary, Michael, Obsession, Backrooms, and then The Odyssey bringing down AMC's site*...what's that expression... tealfan Jun 05, 12:49

What's funny is Netflix will trot out "we're really going to give theatrical a chance" then go "ha ha suckers! you believed us?" IN PRINT. {nm} notfabio Jun 05, 13:01

It's still a disaster but Paramount buying Warner was always the better option (if the deal actually goes through) {nm} Moviesnob Jun 05, 13:08

Netflix benefits from Universal's theatrical run as they'll get OBSESSION and ODYSSEY after a four month Peacock window Moviesnob Jun 05, 13:03

Netflix only started licensing exclusive all rights to titles and producing their own when they believed the studios would stop licensing Moviesnob Jun 05, 13:05
