GIJOE has been far more heavily adverstised than DIST9

Also GIJOE has "name"recognition just from the toys and animated series.  Add to that mix the director of "The Mummy" and a few actors people have at least heard of and an action packed trailer, and GIJOE is certainly going to have more initial buzz. 

I think Tri-Star has done an exceedingly poor job of marketing the film to a wider public  than sci-fi fans, I think because they had little faith or desire in pushing a low budget movie with no name stars, despite Peter Jackson's push behind the film.  By the time they realized they may have gem on their hands they were months behind the game.
