There was an interesting story at MCN, iirc, about DIST9 director Blomkamp losing the chance to develop "Halo" and then getting DIST9...
... within 48 hours. That is, he careened from the "t"entpole genre to the high-concept genre for his next project almost overnight. It's interesting to think about how close he came in that moment from working on something which would have had strong corporate resemblances to GIJOE as a large, well-financed and aggressively marketed but relatively dull premise, to what he actually got to do.
As far as "Children of Men" goes, well, I hope DIST9 is better, too, but I say that believing that "Children of Men" is one of the best new films I've seen in the last ten years: a dazzling, disturbing premise, a clear but twisting story arc, and acting and style values off the charts.
