Same as you can buy or sell a number of stocks, you can also short or cover. You 'short' a stock whenever you think it will go into the red.
It's a way to make money on big flops. In the tradebox on every stockpage you can 'short' a number of stocks. Try it with f.i. a 1000 stocks on a title that begfins the day in the red.
You can 'sell' those 'shorted stocks' by covering them all.
In essence you are buying them back (from the hsx-trade-bank) at a lower price than what you 'bought them for.
The shorting and covering of stocks also exists on the 'real' financial stock exchanges. There you actually buy 'shorted stocks' from a another person or bank as sort of insurance for when stocks go down.
