I think....

Posted by: numbersix_99 on Aug 27, 14:00 in response to lobogotti's post wow, that is some really deep thinking. I'm surprised...

...if we hadn't spent so much time with Walt in advance of such ideas, I coudl buy that. I think of that gangster in Miller's Crossing who juse squeezes out a few tears to avoid being knocked off.

But it's the portrayal of Walt from a frustrated and bumbling teacher to a guy who can manipulate so much that he can cry on cue. Sure, it's possible, who are we to know, etc, etc, but when you set up the rules of a person and then cross them to such a huge degree it feels more like a contradiction than an arc. And the show has been guilty of this a few times. Walt crying in front of Hank in his office is almost believable as he was chanelling his feeling about his failing marriage, but the rest is a step too far. Perhaps I'm spoiled by watching The Wire ;)

OK, am I missing something with newest Breaking Bad? eyescovered Aug 25, 19:08

I don't think it was a stretch at all, rather very good writing for an excellent show. it's being received well by critics and fans alike. lobogotti Aug 26, 07:34

yes great ep, but still doesnt quite work... islander Aug 26, 07:50

Yep, that was my thinking. {nm} eyescovered Aug 26, 09:02

MY concern about this is as above... numbersix_99 Aug 26, 15:34

Well said. eyescovered Aug 26, 16:01

Well, I would RESPECTFULLY disagree. I only see one of those events as manufactured, the others are logical outcomes set up over time. Moviesnob Aug 26, 16:29

Vulture breaks it down pretty good here... eyescovered Aug 26, 16:51

its a recap. It doesn't critique last night's episode other than saying Moviesnob Aug 26, 17:39

Um, not just a recap. Pretty much an entire article on what we're talking about. {nm} eyescovered Aug 26, 18:46

sorry, didn't mean any offense. I don't see where your concerns were addressed {nm} Moviesnob Aug 26, 20:02

here's the writer from the episode (again, vulture) talking directly about the origin and mechanics about the revelation Moviesnob Aug 26, 21:28

No prob man! Maybe you could change your handle to TVsnob ; ) {nm} eyescovered Aug 27, 03:36

perfectly reasonable explanation. and trust me, I'm not a blind advocate for the show...(spoilers) lobogotti Aug 27, 11:27

As entertainment, it's damn good, though for me it used to be better because of these lack of contrivances... numbersix_99 Aug 27, 01:01

wow, that is some really deep thinking. I'm surprised Walt's ability to turn on the tears turns you off so much. lobogotti Aug 27, 11:24

I think.... numbersix_99 Aug 27, 14:00

ha! The debate that will go on for years to come, The Wire or Breaking Bad. At this point I feel BB has a slight lead, and the can retain lobogotti Aug 27, 17:39
