The devil is in the details

Posted by: PRodQuanta on Sep 13, 10:02 in response to lobogotti's post yes, I read the whole SI article... wow Damen. and no...

My question is: How do you pay them? Do you pay them on their valued worth, or do you pay them some flat rate? If so, do you pay every collegiate athlete that flat rate? For all sports? For all divisions?

It starts to get hairy pretty quick.

I think high profile players should get paid. I also think that the government should stop increasing the annual deficit. I think most people would agree on both of these. The heart of the problem if: how do you do it so it is fair to all parties?

If you are following the OK-State football story; my family name is about to be pulled through the mud. I just heard and damenchipguy Sep 12, 20:12

We can never blame the players. The NCAA has these crazy rules. The players are unpaid. Why not take what you can? mrbinns Sep 13, 06:31

The players are paid with a full scholarship with room and board. {nm} Antibody Sep 13, 10:23

And compared to what they bring in to their respective universities, they are working cheap. Bubba_Fett Sep 13, 10:43

At $50,000 a year for non-resident, that's $200,000 value for 4 years. A great deal for the 99% that won't play pro-ball. {nm} Antibody Sep 13, 11:30

How much is that worth for someone who is functionally illiterarte but can play sports real well, does not go to classes, does not mrbinns Sep 13, 12:08

But that is their own fault for not taking advantage of the opportunities GIVEN to them. {nm} BSmurf Sep 13, 12:30

Hard to take advantage of a college education when you can't read above a sixth grade level. {nm} DTravel Sep 13, 13:06

versus the tens of millions that a top Div I school earns off their football program every year? peanuts {nm} charlie Sep 14, 10:43

yes, I read the whole SI article... wow Damen. and no worries here, has nothing to do with you. lobogotti Sep 13, 08:43

I haven't followed this story but based on comments made here, my thoughts are inside DTravel Sep 13, 10:24

Allowing Olympic athletes to pocket some cash hasn't destroyed the integrity of the competition. Bubba_Fett Sep 13, 10:27

I know that college ball effectively is a NFL minor league - that's what I think the problem is. DTravel Sep 13, 11:09

I don't believe Olympic athletes that are still in school/scholarship can take cash either. {nm} Antibody Sep 13, 11:34

Give the players a stipend and a lot of this crap would go away. Bubba_Fett Sep 13, 10:12

With the Cowboys this was bound to happen Sooner or later. {nm} RotoHockeyYTD2013 Sep 13, 13:46

We will handle the Sooners, later! {nm} damenchipguy Sep 13, 15:08
