well before I showed them that post...

Posted by: lobogotti on Aug 22, 06:54 in response to Moviesnob's post what are they saying?

We were talking about familiar properties, sequels and the like.  We're all huge movie lovers, but we started talking about what movies we had avoided this year.

I typed 22 sequels that had been released wide since January and asked each of us to say how many they had seen (and not just in the theater).  None of us had seen more than four.  This is a group text I have with three other guys.

One of the guys studied film and his cousin has a very big hand in the film called Sleight (that got some Sundance love this year).  He was basically saying that we've moved out of the target audience and those films are not for us.  That it's always been this way, we're just getting older and care more about what we watch.

I agree with most of that, but not that it's ALWAYS been this way.  I believe it started no more than 20 years ago and each year brings a tad more saturation.

Showed them all your blog post and kind of opened their eyes (and mine) as to the impact Netflix has had on Indie.

Personally, Netflix has become very formulaic for me. I break down their streaming library like this...

Top Tier Original Content - 5%
Mid Level Original Content - 5%
Poor Original Content - 5%
TV Shows - 30%
Movies - 45%
Documentaries - 10%

Their original content continues to grow and movie offerings continue to decline.

My viewing habits with them are basically this as of the last year: Top Tier Original Content & Documentaries.

By the time a movie hits Netflix, I have already paid to watch it in theaters or on VOD through Apple TV.  Their TV shows, if good enough to watch, I recorded through my DVR and watch through cable.

So I basically keep Netflix around for a few of their shows:  Bloodline, House of Cards, Strange Things, Narcos ... maybe an original film, like Beasts of No Nation

and

ESPN 30 for 30s I miss, also several other documentaries I forget about or didn't know were coming out altogether.

I've been a customer for 8 years now and you made me realize how my personal viewing habits have changed.  It started with only DVD rentals and the latest movies, went to streaming for movies and shows, and with the emergence of Apple TV has shifted to what it is today.

You see I do pay for content, I don't buy often, but I am impatient and rent them ASAP.  Imperium last night for example.

Basically, Netflix is a paid subscription to me now like HBO, Showtime, Encore, Starz and Cinemax (which I have them all).

At the end of the day, I'm one that truly supports all films by actually paying (early and often).  I was gifted an Amazon Firestick with Kodi and don't use it.  Oddly, I can count probably 10 people I know that have one and do use it.  Can't believe how much that has grown and that people are getting away with it.  UFC 202 was a prime example of huge losses this weekend, as a result of Firestick.

At the end of the day, I agree with your post.  I'll still support Netflix for their original content and hard to find documentaries, but continue supporting the Indie films that interest me.  The question is, will the masses?

Lobo, we've quit Stranger Things after episode 4 Moviesnob Aug 18, 12:06

interesting. I don't know many people that don't have it. any reason? {nm} lobogotti Aug 18, 19:28

1) I prefer to own (i have about 8k movies on various formats) 2) its complicated but I believe Netflix is bad for the industry Moviesnob Aug 18, 21:51

YEAH, Disney has been Rocked Big-Time ever since Netflix showed up. Captain Obvious Aug 18, 22:02

I wrote this about Netflix a little over a year ago which helps explain what I'm saying. If you try being polite, we can discuss further Moviesnob Aug 18, 22:26

Please identify which industry companies have suffered catastrophic losses due solely to the Netflix arrival. {nm} Captain Obvious Aug 18, 22:46

its affecting every indie. You should read what I wrote, it will give you a greater understanding than the question you're asking. Moviesnob Aug 18, 23:00

You may have read it but you missed the parts talking about the shift to broadcast which is the man point. but Moviesnob Aug 19, 06:04

I've noticed one of the articles I cited is gone and its an important one. I have it on evernote and you can read it here Moviesnob Aug 19, 06:22

Netflix is GREAT for the Industry (as opposed to BAD). Amazon is Great for the Industry. <INSIDE>. RotoHockey2013Main Port Aug 19, 20:32

$18 billion in 2015 is a lot less than almost $30 billion in 2006 (right before netflix started streaming), no? Moviesnob Aug 19, 21:49

that's a GREAT read! thank you for sharing. {nm} lobogotti Aug 19, 11:43

well before I showed them that post... lobogotti Aug 22, 06:54

glad it had an impact on you and your friends and nice to hear about your transacting in multiple windows. Moviesnob Aug 22, 11:55

these are situations I would have never have even thought about. it's awkward that Netflix is trying to lobogotti Aug 23, 05:47

Yes, but Netflix was just a dvd mail business then. It's still worth more than $50mil today but its a declining business {nm} Moviesnob Aug 23, 08:43

just crazy to think of the "what ifs" {nm} lobogotti Aug 23, 11:09

Sometimes he should change his name to Captain Oblivious, considering you know your stuff on revenue streams skamanfu Aug 19, 14:13

Oh Look - Revenue from Other Streams. Captain Obvious Aug 19, 20:55

I work in the biz. I know most this stuff. MS knows his stuff more than anyone pulling articles that never tell the whole story skamanfu Aug 20, 08:55
