You may have read it but you missed the parts talking about the shift to broadcast which is the man point. but

Posted by: Moviesnob on Aug 19, 06:04 in response to Captain Obvious' post Read what you wrote. The Numbers undermine your Argument...

So quoting the those revenue numbers doesn't make much sense.youre not discussing the points I made, youre quoting stuff that  doesn't talk about broadcast. There is more reliance on non theatrical revenue streams and if they are being weakened due to broadcast, the cheapest window, becoming dominant, then your revenues will shrink. While it's true that some companies have adapted (I run one) and survival of the fittest is true as well, that's ALWAYS true. Magnolia and IFc have output deals with Netflix that allows the to cover all their advances. Alchemy had one too, but Netflix didn't renew and couldn't generate the revenue they used to cover bill's desire to have a DVD aggregation business. So yes, some companies succeed and others don't but in this case Netflix withdrawing from an output deal had direct effect on alchemy going under. That's not something you would know just by googling, you would know that if you worked in the industry.

it seems your other point is there's revenue being made but the box office numbers (as you point out) are driven by studio hits. If you read what I wrote, you'd learn that studios and their tv business have helped cover their loses in theatrical. Indies can't do that since they don't have a tv business.

what do you mean "access to cinemas has changed"? Indies have less reliance on theatrical revenue than ever before.

go back to what I wrote, why is total revenue shrinking (especially in light of more content being consumed)? If you can answered that question, then that might be the key to understanding what's happening. Let's focus on that.

Also there's no evidence folks that were indie customers have shifted into blockbusters. That customer has always liked both. The shift is how they are consuming content, not what content.

Lobo, we've quit Stranger Things after episode 4 Moviesnob Aug 18, 12:06

1) I prefer to own (i have about 8k movies on various formats) 2) its complicated but I believe Netflix is bad for the industry Moviesnob Aug 18, 21:51

YEAH, Disney has been Rocked Big-Time ever since Netflix showed up. Captain Obvious Aug 18, 22:02

I wrote this about Netflix a little over a year ago which helps explain what I'm saying. If you try being polite, we can discuss further Moviesnob Aug 18, 22:26

Please identify which industry companies have suffered catastrophic losses due solely to the Netflix arrival. {nm} Captain Obvious Aug 18, 22:46

its affecting every indie. You should read what I wrote, it will give you a greater understanding than the question you're asking. Moviesnob Aug 18, 23:00

Netflix is GREAT for the Industry (as opposed to BAD). Amazon is Great for the Industry. <INSIDE>. RotoHockey2013Main Port Aug 19, 20:32

$18 billion in 2015 is a lot less than almost $30 billion in 2006 (right before netflix started streaming), no? Moviesnob Aug 19, 21:49

that's a GREAT read! thank you for sharing. {nm} lobogotti Aug 19, 11:43

these are situations I would have never have even thought about. it's awkward that Netflix is trying to lobogotti Aug 23, 05:47

Yes, but Netflix was just a dvd mail business then. It's still worth more than $50mil today but its a declining business {nm} Moviesnob Aug 23, 08:43

just crazy to think of the "what ifs" {nm} lobogotti Aug 23, 11:09

Sometimes he should change his name to Captain Oblivious, considering you know your stuff on revenue streams skamanfu Aug 19, 14:13
