If the statue isn't there, if we remove the civil war from our textbooks, if we fail to recognize our past, isn't there the possibility that history simply repeats itself?
How are children supposed to understand where we were and what we have become, and why we changed our country for the better if they don't go to Bull Run, or Gettysburg, or Shiloh, or Antietam, or Vicksburg, or Chancellorsville, or Fredericksburg, or Richmond, or Washington DC?
Where does it end? Do we then remove confederate grave markers? Do we then remove the confederate skeletal remains? Do we rewrite the history books to say that the hundreds of thousands of union soldiers who lost limbs and lives, died fighting for "freedom for all" against ghosts? That they bled, and died fighting against no one?
Maybe its better to say, children, this is a statue of a person who thought that they were more important than our country as a whole and decided to leave it because they could not come to do what was best for everyone.
Maybe we could remind them that when we look to our neighbor, and treat them as we wish to be treated, we not only save our neighborhoods and our country, we save ourselves from what we could be.
Maybe instead of red and blue states, we could just have united states?
People are not special. We all breath air, drink water, and eat food to sustain ourselves. The moment we deem ourselves special, we look down upon those not like us, and become that which we say we oppose and despise. We are not elite, we are not superior, we are not supreme.
People are significant. We all have an opinion that has a right to be heard, we all have emotions and feelings that matter. We all place qualities in our lives to better ourselves and our communities, and everyone has the right to be heard, to be valued, and to contribute to the betterment of all.
