Looking at white people on the whole isn't very scientific either. The outcome of university enrolment policies such as legacy admissions,
sports scholarships for rowing, lacrosse and water polo, and more subjective elements like personal ratings is to favour white - or more specifically, white applicants from well-off families, and that applicants of all races from low-income families are more likely to be shut out.
To give some stats - at Harvard, legacy students make up about 14% of total admissions, but 22% of admissions for white students. 34% of legacy applicants are accepted, compared with ~7% of non-legacy applicants. 88% of legacy students come from families making $125K+ a year (which make up about 20% of the general population).
65% of student athletes at Ivy League colleges are white, so they're over-represented compared with the general population. About 80% of applicants are accepted, and at Harvard nearly half of student athletes come from families making $250K per year compared with about a third for the entire class (and in the top 5% of the general population). Harvard student athletes come from wealthier backgrounds than the average Harvard student.
The paths that get a student into an elite college like Harvard that aren't based on straight academic merit (affirmative action aside) favour white students from well-off families.
