(the armchair psychologist in me would say he keeps doing the crimes in the open, partially, because he doesn't really want to be president)
but also because it's how he's lived his entire life to date and it's impossible for him to change even if he did really want to be president
mostly i think he consciously or subconsciously just wants his old dumb NYC-Mar a Lago life back but doesn't know a way to quit that doesn't make him look like a loser. plus quitting without a pardon means he's going to prison for a good stretch
