The numbers are worse than those reported. Many can't file for unemployment because they were already underemployed.
For the last 15 to 20 years there have been many rule changes about who can apply and the conditios to apply. Typically if you were underemployed working less than x hours per week then you aren't elegilble to apply. Guess which jobs fit that niche.
Then consider the folks that are working under the table or bar, just cash. There are a lot more of those than the syestm could ever acknowledge and a lot of them aren't illegal just working for somone that doesn't want to file pay the taxes or socal security and medicare.
Then you have a really interesting group that are self employeed and not filing it all or making too little to bother.
The unemployment numbers have been one of the biggest most open lies for both parties for a lot of years.
