My background is also in "real markets". Don't get me wrong, HSX is an invaluable model, because it has proven many economists and market analysts/architects wrong, and provides an amazing sandbox. But yeah, many of our other staples are not applicable :(
I did invest a good amount of time trying to revolutinize HSX by applying real-world financial models to the game, because you know, no one had ever done that before... so obviously, that was useful.
