my problem is that while a rules list is fine, there are some instances where the players and hsx have allowed "shades of gray", which would be difficult to describe and which if eliminated, could lessen the fun here. as for an all encompassing CoC, 1. it could never cover all issues that will pop up and 2. some players are always going to disregard them anyways and 3. some harmless posts could wind up being moderated on a strict following of the CoC and 4. some stuff just cant be explained without killing the joke (e.g. BUY PINK2!) ;)
example on point 3: a veteran player always posts tracking info on Mondays about the weeks coming openers, but he never provides an actual link. Why? well he works in the industry and the info he shares cant be linked to without being an issue on his end. So we all accept this because he has proven his trustworthiness over thousands of posts. But how to explain that to a new person who doesnt know the player and who then decides its okay to post something himself without a link? I wouldnt think HSX could allow a rule to be broken by one player and not by the rest and they're certainly not going to namecheck a specific player in the rules, so a strict CoC could cut out that guys posts which we all love.
You mention gut checks, which Antibody summed up in his post. But would a player really understand what a gutcheck is just by reading a CoC? No. Best way to learn is by following along, I think. Also, while straight up gut checks arent allowed before midnight, what about a player who wants to legitimately ask early in the week about an opener? Might they be hesitant to post if the coc says no gutchecks? Yes. Again best way to learn is by following along or asking.
You mention about new players not knowing certain things. well really there isnt that much! One, no straight up gutchecks (e.g. I'm long on Last Song!) until midnight eastern before opening, and 2. if posting news, provide a link.
But problem with the last part, players and hsx both want the info linked to be factual (or at least reputable, as deals are always changing in Hollywood) Variety, Nikki Finke, Box office mojo among others are acceptable sources. Jimbos Blog of Comics and Shotguns is not. But how to explain that to a new person? Would the CoC spell out exactly which sites are acceptable and which are not? No. So again, its back to follow along and ask.
So where to ask? Well players board, although perhaps not enough vets post there enough to provide a balance of opinion. The leagues may be helpful as well. Also some info on the more shades of gray/traditions can be found on the hsx fansites under community, esp. ampersand, tt wiki and hsx dude
as for older players being mean, well sure some, but I dont think there is much at all. Have you been to other forums? The movies board here is the easiest, friendliest forums Ive ever been in. Now I sometimes get snarky, which I am trying to cut back on!, but if a new guy is really trying to join in, Im glad to help as are many others
