Novelist John Irving adapts his own 1985 novel for the big screen in this heart-rending tale of an orphan boy who begins to come of age and experiences a whole new world outside the orphanage.
Tobey Maguire plays Homer Wells who grows up in the St. Cloud Orphanage in Maine where he is lovingly nurtured by father figure Dr. Wilbur Larch, played by the irrepressible Michael Caine. The kindly doctor has taught Homer the medical skills needed to care for abandoned children and newborns.
Homer, however, is at odds with Dr. Larch on the issue of abortion as he refuses to assist the old doctor in performing illegal abortions. When a young couple arrives at St. Cloud for an abortion, an Air Force pilot played by Paul Rudd and his girlfriend played by the enchanting Charlize Theron, Homer decides, quite on the spur of the moment, to leave with them to the apple orchard and cider mill run by the pilot's family.
With this decision, Homer essentially leaves the safe, protected world of Dr. Larch and the orphanage behind. When the pilot is off to battle, Homer begins to feel the first stirrings of love for the girlfriend left behind in the bucolic world of the apple cider mill.
