Billy Elliot is the feature debut from director Stephen Daldry, bringing his experience from the stage. Daldry has produced over 100 plays and was last the director of the Royal Court Theatre in England. Director Peter Cattaneo secured a Best director nomination in 1997 for his similarly themed film The Full Monty.
The debut film for the Universal Focus label, Billy Elliot is the uplifting story of a poor 11-year-old boy from a working class town in England who dreams of attending the National Ballet School. Newcomer Jamie Bell plays the title character that secretly drops his boxing class for ballet lessons. He grew to love dancing, but has to hide it from his father and older brother, who are coal miners on strike. Julia Walters plays the ballet instructor who inspires Billy and helps him overcome the opposition in his family.
