The nominations for the 88th Academy Awards were announced earlier today. The Hollywood Stock Exchange offered NominOptions for the leading contenders in the top eight categories and HSX traders collectively successfully predicted 86% of the Oscar nominees this year. Here's how each category broke down.
Best Picture named 8 nominees this year: Bridge of Spies [N6PBOS], Brooklyn [N6PBRK], Mad Max: Fury Road [N6PMAX], Room [N6PROM], Spotlight [N6PSPO], The Big Short [N6PBIG], The Martian [N6PMAR] and The Revenant [N6PREV]. HSX correctly picked 6, leaving out Brooklyn and Room for Caol and Straight Outta Compton.
The Best Director nominees were Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu – The Revenant [N6DAGG], George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road [N6DGMI], Lenny Abrahamson – Room [N6DLAB], Tom McCarthy – Spotlight [N6DTMC] and Adam McKay – The Big Short. HSX picked 3 out of 4, favoring Ridley Scott – The Martian over Lenny Abrahamson. A NominOption was regrettably not offered for McKay.
The Best Actor nominees were Bryan Cranston – Trumbo [N6ABCR], Eddie Redmayne – The Danish Girl [N6AERE], Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant [N6ALDI], Matt Damon – The Martian [N6AMDA] and Michael Fassbender – Steve Jobs [N6AMFA]. HSX scored a perfect 5 out of 5.
The Best Actress nominees were Brie Larson – Room [N6CBLA], Cate Blanchett – Carol [N6CCBL], Charlotte Rampling – 45 Years [N6CCRA], Jennifer Lawrence – Joy [N6CJLA], and Saoirse Ronan – Brooklyn [N6CSRO]. HSX went another 5 for 5.
The Best Supporting Actor nominees were Christian Bale – The Big Short [N6SCBA], Mark Ruffalo – Spotlight [N6RMRU], Mark Rylance – Bridge of Spies[N6RMRY], Sylvester Stallone – Creed [N6RSST], Tom Hardy – The Revenant [N6RTHA]. HSX got 4 out of 5, picking Idris Elba - Beasts of No Nation over Hardy.
The Best Supporting Actress nominees were Alicia Vikander – The Danish Girl [N6SAVI], Jennifer Jason Leigh – The Hateful Eight [N6SJJL], Kate Winslet – Steve Jobs [N6SKWI], Rachel McAdams – Spotlight [N6SRMC] and Rooney Mara – Carol [N6SRMA]. HSX was once again 5 for 5.
The Best Adapted Screenplay nominees were Brooklyn [N6EBRK], Carol [N6ECAR], Room [N6EROM], The Big Short [N6EBIG] and The Martian [N6EMAR]. HSX picked 4 out 5, subbing Steve Jobs for Carol.
The Best Original Screenplay nominees were Bridge of Spies [N6OBOS], Ex Machina [N6OEXM], Inside Out [N6OINS], Spotlight [N6OSPO] and Straight Outta Compton [N6OSOC]. HSX went 4 for 5, missing Inside Out with The Hateful Eight.
