Oscar expands the Best Picture category to 10 nominations

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that there will be 10 nominees for Best Picture at the 82nd Academy Awards. The last time that happened was 65 years ago in 1943 when 'Casablanca' beat out nine other contenders for the Oscar. By widening the field to 10, the Academy gets to recognize and promote more films. The snub of such popular mainstream films as 'The Dark Knight' and 'WALL-E' last year often cast the Academy as out of touch with the general movie-going public. The Oscar race is now wide open, where an winner could emerge with as low as 11% of the votes. Aside from doubling up the films getting the Oscar bump in its box office, the main beneficiaries are the Trade Publications, Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, that get a huge percent of ad revenue from all the 'For Your Consideration' ads each award season.
