Fox Searchlight has revealed the teaser trailer for the musical Black Nativity [BNTVT] based on the gospel play by Langston Hughes. Jennifer Hudson [JHUDS] plays a mother who sends his troubled teenage son to spend the holidays in New York City with his grandparents, played by Forest Whitaker [FWHIT] and Angela Bassett [ABASS]. Apparently not satisfied with the trailer released just a month ago, Warner Bros. has cut a second trailer for Prisoners [PRSNS] on Apple. Identical in length to the first one, the new trailer rearranges some scenes, but otherwise remains relatively the same. The only major difference is the removal of scenes showing a hand drawing a maze. Prisoners opens on September 20th.
Two new action comedies engage in a battle of sexes this weekend, but Monsters University [MONS2] should repeat atop the box office. The G-rated Pixar prequel has excellent word of mouth and no competition for the family audience. Brave dropped 49% last year, but it was an original story. The much derided Cars 2 tumbled 60% in 2011, while the more beloved Toy Story 3 declined 46% in 2010. Monsters University looks to fall in between around 50% to about $42 million.
