The box office battle of horror sequels was won by The Final Destination [FDES4] with an estimated $28.3 million weekend.  The opening is a franchise best for Warner Bros. Halloween 2 [H2] meanwhile debuted in third place with $17.4 million.  The Final Destination was helped in part by 3D showings, which costs a few dollars more than normal screens.  Faced with a choice, more moviegoers opted for the fresher material.   While Halloween 2 is a direct sequel to a remake of a well-worn...

Studios typically avoid going after the same audience by scheduling films of the same genre together.  In a Hollywood rarity, two horror films open head to head this weekend.  Both are sequels that must also contend with Inglourious Basterds [BSTRD], another R-rated male-targeted film coming off a $38 million splash last weekend.  All three appear to have a chance to claim first place at the box office.

Whereas Fast & Furious lost a couple of ‘The' from its title in its fourth edition...

This weekend is all about horror with The Final Destination [FDES4] and Halloween 2 [H2] making their way to theaters.  The Final Destination is the continuation of the franchise where characters are slowly picked off after initially escaping death.  The film series is known for inventing creative ways to kill its characters, this time in 3-D fashion.  Halloween 2 is the sequel to Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake of the classic.  The clever ads for this fright fest are on the site as we speak.

All we know about the sci-fi actioner Inception [INCPT] is that it's set within the constructs of the mind.  The logline alone reminds us of The Matrix.  The trailer only reinforces that comparion with a biref snippet of a gravity defying fight.   Perhaps Leonardo DiCaprio [LDCAP] plays a detective who enter people's mind to solve a crime, as suggested by the tagline "Your mind is the scene of a crime".  The cinematography and music seems very reminiscent of teasers to The Dark Knight...

Inglourious Basterds [BSTRD] succeeded in its mission at the box office and filled the coffers of The Weinstein Co. to distribute another day.  The World War II actioner opened with a better than expected $37.6 million, the biggest ever for director Quentin Tarantino [QTARA] topping Kill Bill Part 2’s $25.1 million.  Although the R-rated film played loose with history, the bloody violence appealed to male moviegoers.  While word of mouth should be good, fans are likely to have already...

Less than six weeks away from its opening, Shutter Island [SHISL] had its release date from October 2, 2009 to Feburary 19, 2010.  The well-cut trailer has already been building anticipation and buzz for the thriller touted as a year-end awards contender.  Reportedly, Paramount "doesn't have the financing in 2009 to spend the $50M to $60M necessary to market" it and "the release date of February 19th... is when Silence Of The Lambs came out back in 1991".

Newsflash to Paramount: The...
