Stupid Question - Short vs. Long

I don't get it. Is there a difference between buying a stock "long" and buying it "short"? Is there an advantage one way or the other that I'm missing? Or are they basically the same, and covering is basically "selling stocks that you bought as short"?

I've tried to figure out the difference, but I can't quite understand.
