Buy <--> Sell

Short<--> Cover

 

To get rid of a buy (aka long) you sell.  To get rid of a short, you cover.

We have sell AND cover because technically it is  possible for a port to have some long shares and some short shares at the same time for the same stock and the game needs to know which one you want to get rid of.
