I have 1 stock that I bought as a "short"

I bought 1 stock as a "short" not understanding exactly what that was.  I bought it probably a year ago and the price when down, my gains went up...happy.....well now the stock is beginning to rise and my gains have begun to go down.....so I thought, "I better sell while I have a decent return".  Lo and behold, I tried to sell and the site says that I can't sell because I don't own anything.  WTH?????  Help my lug brain to get this.  Thank you!  Bob
