in the interests of accuracy; that most recent IPO, all the shares *did* go long before reset. I bought some from
the last 500,000, then watched the stock go up to about $51-something before I was satisfied I could leave it as was (foolishly it turned out) - I don't remember what time it was then, but it was well before reset by many hours. Traders playing at reset seem to look at what went up/down a lot in the previous day, and this stock would be no exception (the exceptions tend to be stocks whose news is so important, or so very recent, that news-motivated traders outnumber those playing the reset). Reset traders have no interest in supporting the collective wisdom expressed by traders re the long-term value of an IPO! But the stock in question is for a movie that won't be released until 2013, so I personally can understand traders' unwillingness to keep so much invested in a pricey IPO for 18 months ... unless they're very rich, and perhaps then they are fine with the fluctuations. All the volume of stocks held before the initial offering is spent tells you is whether or not you'll make some money *before* reset ... it tells you nothing about what happens later.
The answer to the OP's question about why he/she plays the IPO's is because he/she still wants to get rich quick :) The risk is the price you pay for playing a fast-moving stock; it can move fast away from you too.
