It's been a while now since I watched the film, so I can't accurately remember, but I'm not actually going to watch it again to find out.

As much as I think that you may be right, you do have to realize that Hollywood has portrayed people/people groups in ways like that since the movie industry actually started. I was making the point that picking on Mel Gibson for something that the industry as a whole does, while accepting the rest of the industry and all their portrayals of people/people groups, is the height of hypocrisy. No one person should be singled out to be the 'fall guy' with regards to this particular problem, which I think Mel Gibson largely has been, mostly by Hollywood itself, and also by the mainstream media. I think that if someone wants to take issue with him, they should also take issue with all other people/movie studios like him. The problem is that people are so quick to judge Mel for what he did, and so quick to forget the hundreds of examples of other filmmakers, studios, etc throughout the years that have done exactly the same thing (particularly, I've found, if such a person or studio is a personal favourite). Not getting religious here, but Christians in particular have, 90% of the time, been portrayed in much the same way in Hollywood movies. How many times have you seen the local vicar/priest/pastor been portrayed as a affeminite wimp/crazy person/whatever else? I could name many other examples, but that should suffice for now.

IPO Needed: SHOCKER! Mel Gibson And Joe Eszterhas To Collaborate On Film Telling Jewish Hero Judah Maccabee Story For Warner Bros - DL accountant_4_Jesus Sep 08, 17:54

Maccabee led the revolt against Greece, but his family became corrupt and jewish leaders had to create the mythology of Chanukah to cover up Moviesnob Sep 08, 18:16

Interesting piece of trivia there. Thanks for that. Yes, I wonder how it's going to be told. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Sep 08, 18:19

It is not trivia. Not sure where that came from. Not the case. {nm} GMov Sep 08, 21:31

There I go for just accepting something at face value... *facepalm* {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Sep 08, 21:32

For clarity, what aspect of Jesus calling it "trivia" are you objecting to? {nm} Apokalips Sep 08, 22:53

If Gibson's heavily involved, I can't imagine the telling being anything that could be perceived as anti-Semitic. Ruthian23 Sep 08, 18:22

its just interesting that he picks a hero yes, but one that set the stage for a period in Jewish History that isnt flattering {nm} Moviesnob Sep 08, 18:25

considering he frequently is utilizing martyrdom in his films, Masada would have been a an interesting choice if he's looking for redemption {nm} Moviesnob Sep 08, 18:27

Where he is one of the ones slaughtered by the Romans? :P {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Sep 08, 20:24

Yeah, I agree. I'm just thinking his people would have put an actual leash on him before they let him do anything possibly offensive. {nm} Ruthian23 Sep 08, 18:34

Does Mel even have "people" anymore? {nm} Apokalips Sep 08, 22:55

Dude, that's ridiculous. There is no truth to that. {nm} GMov Sep 08, 21:30

I won't pay for a Gibson film, but can't wait for the Tourette-like outtakes layered with Eszterhaus' literary flourishes{nm} DTXbro Sep 08, 19:34

Personally I don't really care what he does in his personal life. accountant_4_Jesus Sep 08, 20:06

if he would hate christians and not jews, i dont think you would feel the same way {nm} Moviesnob Sep 08, 20:57

Actually I would feel the same way (more inside). The difference with this is that Mel Gibson has changed a lot since that incident in 2006. accountant_4_Jesus Sep 08, 21:11

its more than saying jews start all the wars, but I appreciate your point {nm} Moviesnob Sep 08, 21:17

I met Mel a good number of times years ago when I was in marketing and we did work for his films. All I can say is.. mrbeankc Sep 09, 01:31

Yeah, sure, people can have "likes& dislikes" but if his dislikes include entire subtypes of human beings, we shouldn't "let him be himself" Apokalips Sep 08, 23:05

How is his behaviour in that regard any different to someone that we see down the street? accountant_4_Jesus Sep 08, 23:17

The Passion is a masterpiece. It is also an openly antisemitic film. tawdryhepburn Sep 09, 00:34

I really wish this were an Onion headline. As an MOT, I'm highly offended. {nm} kydem Sep 08, 21:03
