Twilight 4 (2011, D) Franchise has utterly Broken Dawn: anemic acting, ludicrous writing, kitschy directing & a troubling pro-life ideology.
Take Shelter (2011, A-) Allegory, drama, thriller? This heartbreaking and brain teasing fall down the rabbit hole of sanity b(l)ends genres.
The Birds (1963, B+): the dated special effects take nothing away from the timeless Hitchcock mise-en-scène and the haunting sound design.
Wuthering Heights (2011, B+): Arnold's dogged, muddy, abstract take on Brontë is anything but literary. Visceral visuals eclipse dialogue.
Shame (2011, A-): McQueen's intensely sad poem about siblings abusing their bodies pinpoints the 'condition humaine' in the 21st century.
Les Géants (2011, C): Strange mix of sugarcoated naturalism (kids) & fairytale caricature (adults). The result: a Disneyfied Dardennes film.
