Yes, because people could come during the trailers. And with film, it's a heck of a lot easier to just let the thing play then to stop it
after the trailers and splice it back together. I guess i could see digital sites stopping the show after 10 minutes if nobody came to conserve the bulb, but usually the projectionist isn't really in touch with the box office that much anyway.
