"A place of greater safety" is tremendous. If I recall, it was her first novel, and it sat in a drawer for 10 years+.
I was ready not to like the film at all, and I felt pretty detached from it for the most part. But I enjoyed watching the cast sing in pretty relentless close-ups. I thought, too, that four or five times that RCROW achieved a brief resonance (single syllables) which disclose that he can produce a much richer sound; I think it's too bad his coaches could not help him find that more consistent sound. "Stars" wound up being chatty in the style he achieved, and that's not persuasive.
I liked the last shot, not for its ontology, but it's a striking image.
I can imagine feeling some impatience with the movie, so I could get back to reading Mantel. :)
