Haneke and Russell have built intimate, theatrical films, letting us watch good actors do their work well.
Lee has fashioned a sweeping and seemless story built around a great question.
Spielberg is as always wonderful without apparent effort.
Zeitlin has his partisans, too.
It's a relief that the director of the pleasant movie isn't nominated, so we're spared that.
