Movies

the summer of 1984 had Gremlins, Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, Star Trek III, Beverly Hills Cop, Temple of Doom, Revenge of the Nerds

Posted by: charlie (a.k.a mickpix) on Jan 28, 17:44 in response to lobogotti's post my best guess on those "event" films is that...

there was crazy competition in the 80s during summer.  but home video was barely established, and theatricals didn't hit pay cable for a year after, so they ran much longer in theaters.  plus when you make good movies instead of crap, you tend to expand your audience

Twister was a thing of box office beauty. 41M OW and ends up have a 6.0 multiplier through its whole run. lobogotti Jan 28, 16:59

Twister has a great score (one of my favorites) RazorHawk Jan 28, 17:04

Yes, many songs I love in that film {nm} lobogotti Jan 28, 17:12

Music Trivia: The movie Twister is why Sammy Hagar quit Van Halen RazorHawk Jan 28, 18:00

wow, that's crazy. hadnt a clue. there's a tidbit of van halen at the end scene that I love. cant listen this very second, but lobogotti Jan 28, 18:31

yes.. when they are argueing about who will run the lab... that is "Humans Being" by Van Halen RazorHawk Jan 28, 18:54

i did the same kind of research with films back in the 80s - Gremlins opened with $12mil, then had an 18week run to $144m {nm} adrenalin112 Jan 28, 17:11

my best guess on those "event" films is that there just wasn't near the amount of competition. exciting, new films were popping up lobogotti Jan 28, 17:16

yeah movies like gremlins & back to the future ran for 3-9 months. in that time frame a movie can go from theater to HBO now {nm} adrenalin112 Jan 28, 17:34

This Is the End is on Starz... That's not even 8 months! {nm} lobogotti Jan 28, 18:00

good info. yeah, just scrolled through all of 1984. not near as many films opening as a 2013, but there certainly was some beastly movies. lobogotti Jan 28, 17:59

The second time I saw it in theatres, late in the run, there were four of us in the theatre. And sometime near the drive-in sequence. . . second gary Jan 28, 19:28

Post-HSX, the Sixth Sense's run was 11x its OW, My Big Fat Greet Wedding 80x(!) its wide OW (both per BOM). {nm} KalElFan Jan 28, 21:08

At least Greek Wedding was. :-) {nm} KalElFan Jan 28, 21:08

How about Titanic and Avatar, respectively.. ? {nm} Facto Jan 29, 03:03

Yep, Titanic about 23x its OW, Avatar just under 10x. {nm} KalElFan Jan 29, 05:37
