Humor and character is what makes Deadpool popular, not the dark elements

Posted by: drakkar on Feb 13, 16:08 in response to Moviesnob's post I think the right question to ask DC/Warner is not about...

The dark elements are what separates Deadpool from being something seen as only appealing to kids.

The success for the movie started when Marvel editors were looking for pitches for a Deadpool solo book - trying to compete with other dark mercenary, anti-hero characters. All of the pitches were treating him like a very saracastic, slightly crazy Punisher.

Joe Kelly's took the angle that the audience had to be rooting for him. He had to be a character that people in some way liked.  Kelly clearly understand humor for 6-12 year old boys - wanted to make him funny.  Nearly everything that makes Deadpool who is is was created by Joe Kelly and then other writers have gone and ran with what Joe Kelly did.

Joe Kelly's Deadpool book ended when most of the X-Men writers walked out of an X-Men Writing Retreat (X-Retreat) in protest and formed Man of Action - a writing collective who writes and develops animated cartoons. Their best known for Cartoon Network's Ben 10 and Generator Rex. Members of Man of Action also created the comic that Big Hero Six was based on and they got a writing credit collectively for that as well.

There is a really childish quality to Deadpool that makes him appealing. It is humor for 8 year old boys.

Rob Liefield can get all the accolades for creating Deadpool, but most of the credit should go to Joe Kelly.

I think the right question to ask DC/Warner is not about making more R rated superheros movies, but making more fun ones Moviesnob Feb 13, 13:13

Which begs the follow up: After celebrating "dark" superhero movies (Batman), are audiences changing their preference to "fun" ones? Chest Rockwell Feb 13, 13:19

I think the success of Marvel/Disney has something to do with their tone, especially in contrast to Nolan's Batman movies and Man of Steel Moviesnob Feb 13, 13:44

I think they like both. IronMan wasn't dark. {nm} Dorfman Feb 13, 16:46

Agreed. Most superhero movies take themselves too seriously. And, the characters never have a good time or enjoy themselves. magicdreamer Feb 13, 13:31

agreed. Guardians was a blast, Deadpool as well. SSquad looks like fun and I think they took a cue from Guardians when developing. {nm} lobogotti Feb 13, 14:24

Very well said Drakkar. RREYN is great with humor like that. Van Wilder, Waiting, Deadpool {nm} Dorfman Feb 13, 16:45

Love fun movies and movies where it seems the actors are having fun making them {nm} Dorfman Feb 13, 16:44

Guess how you make ryan Reynolds the star of a successful movie is disfigure his face and cover it up {nm} djgrimlok Feb 13, 17:16

Was that a shot? LOL {nm} RREYN Feb 14, 01:55

For the most art the source material is incomparable. For decades Superman and Batman ruled the roost. tradermark Feb 13, 23:32
