For the most art the source material is incomparable. For decades Superman and Batman ruled the roost.

Posted by: tradermark on Feb 13, 23:32 in response to Moviesnob's post I think the right question to ask DC/Warner is not about...

In the 40's Marvel/Timely had some superhero material but in the 50's pretty much none while Batman and Superman ran straght through from the late 30's. Then in the early 60's all the Marvel stuff came into being.

With that little history out of the way to adress your statement. The DC stuff sold and barely changed over all that time. The same villians over and over, the same does the world find out their secret identity. How many times did Superman fight Luthor? Batman vs a core of repititve criminals? Marvel stories at the time were simply deeper and explored more of the characters and more issues. So the answer is the Marvel stuff has 50-60 years to draw on and the Superman universe less than half that reached the same level of sophistication.

Best thing i can tell you is take a look at some anthology of old Superman or Batan stories and then at some Archie comics from 1980 and earlier. You won't find much difference.

I think the right question to ask DC/Warner is not about making more R rated superheros movies, but making more fun ones Moviesnob Feb 13, 13:13

Which begs the follow up: After celebrating "dark" superhero movies (Batman), are audiences changing their preference to "fun" ones? Chest Rockwell Feb 13, 13:19

I think the success of Marvel/Disney has something to do with their tone, especially in contrast to Nolan's Batman movies and Man of Steel Moviesnob Feb 13, 13:44

I think they like both. IronMan wasn't dark. {nm} Dorfman Feb 13, 16:46

Agreed. Most superhero movies take themselves too seriously. And, the characters never have a good time or enjoy themselves. magicdreamer Feb 13, 13:31

agreed. Guardians was a blast, Deadpool as well. SSquad looks like fun and I think they took a cue from Guardians when developing. {nm} lobogotti Feb 13, 14:24

Humor and character is what makes Deadpool popular, not the dark elements drakkar Feb 13, 16:08

Very well said Drakkar. RREYN is great with humor like that. Van Wilder, Waiting, Deadpool {nm} Dorfman Feb 13, 16:45

Love fun movies and movies where it seems the actors are having fun making them {nm} Dorfman Feb 13, 16:44

Guess how you make ryan Reynolds the star of a successful movie is disfigure his face and cover it up {nm} djgrimlok Feb 13, 17:16

Was that a shot? LOL {nm} RREYN Feb 14, 01:55
