Don't erase canon you don't understand because you can't understand it. Just because it's unpopular doesn't mean 1. It won't retroactively become more popular with the success of a follow-up, and 2. They can't elaborate and embellish the already established facts in that film.
Let the audience decide...and trust me, "The Cloverfield Paradox" has its fans.
