To be honest, Disney's trailers for LY were confusing at first, then later trailers basically sold it as a kid's move verison of "Interstellar," off tone and viabliity.
The problem is just that: a dark tone for the film's narrative. If we're talking about a film that inspired the purchase of the Lightyear toy by Andy, doesn't it make more sense its a film that's more inspriting and less dreary? With a much more lively and funner tone?
Which brings us to "Minions" which continues to have a more fun and lively tone. I was also amazed how projections for the new one were low, really low (40-50 million opening weekend). This considering the last "Minions" film opened to well over 100+ million at start.. So I sided with "Minions."
Now the whole "kiss" contreversy could have been handled better, no question, on Disney's part. Once the decision was made to put that part back into the film, there should have been a effort to focus marketing on that being part of "Pride Month" celebration. I'm actually really surprised Disney marketing didn't do that to help mediate any controversy.
I've seen "Lightyear," and the film isn't horrible either.. The team he assembles (and the robot car) are awesome to watch, but I couldn't over-look the tone aspect of the narrative compared to what "Minions" will offer (I personally feel M will be one of the funniest films of the year off its marketing).
As always HSXers... Have a great film summer..
