High end stop motion is still cheaper than high end CGI (about 60 million for a typical Laika jam vs 150+ million) but ceiling is lower.
9 was envisioned as a stop-motion film (at least when it was a short film), but done in CGI.
Stop motion animated films are basically in the same bad position that mid-budget films have been in, Laika had a run of profitable stop-motion films (and incredible timing with Coraline near the peak of 3D heights), but their profitabilty has been going down Kubo & The Two Strings broken even/small loss and Missing Link was a disaster.
