Just one example: Look at Christmas, 2018. Look at this list, and then think about this week.

Posted by: goodvibe61 on Dec 25, 13:42 in response to goodvibe61's post The problem is: THERE ARE NO MOVIES PEOPLE WANT TO SEE!!...

New Releases just before Christmas:

Aquaman
Mary Poppins
Transformers Bumblebee
Spiderman Into the Spiderverse
Second Act
Holmes & Watson (bombed)
Mortal Engines (Bombed a couple weeks earlier, was still out there)
Welcome to Marwen (bombed even worse lol)

For the Adults you had:

The Mule
Vice (Vice alone did 14 Million the week of Christmas DAy to New Year's Day)
On the Basis of Sex
If Beale Street Could Talk

Plus: you still had extremely strong holdovers from Thanksgiving, including:

Ralph Breaks the Internet
The Grinch
Bohemian Rhapsody
Creed II
Fantastic Beasts

PLUS, you still had the earlier fall Oscar movies in play:

Green Book
the Favourite
Mary Queen of Scots

Hell, you still had A Star Is Born in some theaters, and it did a million dollars that week, 3 months after its original release date.

I haven't even listed everything that made half a million bucks that last week of 2018.

Ask yourself a question, and don't kid yourselves. Not knowing these above films, and it's Christmas day, and you have a week off looming to chill, are there not at least a couple to a few things you'd consider going to see? there's something for everyone, and in most cases more than one thing.

Mojo shows that the number 15 movie at the box office that week would be Green Book. And it made 3.8 million dollars that week.

The number 5 movie was The Mule. And it made 23 Million dollars that week.

I'm sorry. But you compare almost any year, from 2019 and go back, compared to right now, and it's pretty obvious what the problem is. There were a mass of films that appealed to many shapes and sizes during the holidays. Now, It's crickets. Or, it's an Avatar sequel that's a decade late, and a few other things thrown out there with very little apparent release strategy in mind.

If you put me back in 2019, and you show me right now in a crystal ball, I don't think I'd even believe you.

It's insane.

BOM has the three day at ~$84m. 2021 was ~$144m and 2019 was ~$197m. This is concerning Moviesnob Dec 25, 12:54

2019 was 27th to 29th so no Xmas when its naturally slower {nm} Moviesnob Dec 25, 13:00

I'm guessing there are two factors at play: Some studios want theatrical to fail in favor of streaming; Studios production pipeline DTravel Dec 25, 14:44

Name one studio that wants theatrical to fail {nm} Moviesnob Dec 25, 14:52

Wanting stream to succeed and theatrical to fail is not the same thing, really. TheWeekendWarrior Dec 25, 14:58

And how many of the currently existing streamers were active in Dec. 2018? TheWeekendWarrior Dec 25, 15:22

And what movies released in the last two months on streaming only would you pay to see in the theater? {nm} WeAreTeamDemo Dec 26, 03:27

i made sure to catch Glass Onion in theaters during the week it was available (it would still be raking it in if Lionsgate hadn't ****ed up) {nm} donny blaze Dec 26, 14:56

In terms of trends... Qix Dec 25, 15:06

The sheer volume of content is squeezing theatrical for sure. {nm} Moviesnob Dec 25, 15:09

I feel like the amount of content is getting less and less... TheWeekendWarrior Dec 25, 15:55

I personally dont think critics have a big effect on releases. User reviews/ratings drive more interest now. {nm} Moviesnob Dec 25, 16:04

My opinion is some movie reviewers thought of themselves as critics and have written themselves out of a job rather than just reviewing a Catzan Dec 27, 11:52

People want to be entertained. Niche art house isn't that {nm} JayPrimetown Dec 25, 18:46

Bottom line.. Film quality needs to get better.. SpiderMan NWH and ToP Gon M clearly showed the audience is there for good concept takes. {nm} VictorY Dec 25, 16:38

Bingo! Waaaaay too many super hero movies - Marvel, DC, etc.. Now & then is fine, but don't make a film from EVERY Marvel character! {nm} Flash Dec 26, 10:09

And another thing...Disney is the big dog in the yard. Everyone cleared the way for Avatar to do 300m opening with a continuing leggy Catzan Dec 27, 22:31

This wasn't just one thing (and its not because studios want to make bad movies, thats stupidity talking) Moviesnob Dec 27, 23:51

Hollywood will make anything that makes money. They are in the midst of trying to deal with streaming and for some reason haven't realized Catzan Dec 28, 15:18
