It's got a strange quality to it. There are moments early on where you might think: Is this thing going to be any good or am I wasting my time? It definitely feels somewhat slight at times.
But it gathers steam. An the last 15 minutes just kill.
One of the greatest uses of a song in a film that I've ever seen. That song is September by Earth, Wind & Fire. There's a friendship in this film, it hits its stride on September 21st, 1984. Summer is over; it's the first day of fall. The song is used throughout the story, to genius effect.
I would say, this is one of those animated films that's different from the slick sort of big ticket animation you enjoy. This is the opposite of Pixar or Illumination. This is small, strange, and ultimately very grown up and emotional. I didn't expect the emotional punch that came with this when i saw it. I never listed it here as seen; i'm gonna list it Monday, because i want it to get the grade. It's a rewarding trip.
