Anora: B; second viewing. It's fine. Too long and repetitive; and the milieu doesn't really work very well for me.

What am i supposed to make of this story?

This girl does not "love" this guy; she loves the money. Clearly. That's front and center. So: when the "moment" comes, there's no emotional beat for me. And so that last scene finally, FINALLY comes, and it doesn't work like it should.

Honestly: she did not KNOW this person. At all. the idea of any true emotional attachment rings false. The characters are telling her this for 2 plus hours. You don't know this guy. You don't know anything about him, where he comes from, what this is all about.

At the end of the day, not sure what she's ****ing about; she made 25K in a couple weeks. I think that's just a little better than what she was making as a stripper/escort (that's another thing in the movie that doesn't help with the emotional heft; why does she keep being outraged when everyone calls her an escort, a prostitute, etc.

I liked the humor the best. From the moment the Toros and Garnik show up, it's a hoot for long stretches. And yes; I did think the situation between Anora and Igor had the potential to be great; it's fine at best, mostly due to who Anora is vs who she seems to think she is.

It's definitely worth a look; I don't know if it's worth the two that I've sat through. But anytime my wife wants to go see something, it's my favorite time at the movies.

love your last sentence {nm} Moviesnob Dec 02, 12:53

And the ironic part is: she liked it far less than I did, even on the 2nd viewing for me. Still, great times. {nm} goodvibe61 Dec 03, 07:38

it's basically a reverse of the joke about the guy who really believes the stripper likes him frank hardballer Dec 02, 13:28

she knows that but that doesn't change the fact she has access to wealth now and wants to fight for that {nm} Moviesnob Dec 02, 13:51

i get that on one level. but also given who Vanya's family is, in real life it could/would have ended much worse for her frank hardballer Dec 02, 15:56

Folks do and think certain ways that are much worse for much less wealth {nm} Moviesnob Dec 02, 16:03

It is. She is young and dumb (believes that he really loves her) ndmaster Dec 02, 15:35
