Saw F1 at my favorite Irvine Spectrum IMAX. Incredible looking film. The plot is just about okay. The way they used the actual, REAL F1 world to film in, it does make the movie pretty immersive.
Some of the plot elements were pretty laughable; example; the last time I watched 2 teammates "help" each other out on the F1 circuit was.......I don't remember. The fact is, it's the exact opposite. The drivers are jealous of each other and covet their own position within the sport. Go ask Max Verstappen how he feels about helping out his Red Bull teammate. And there's a lot of little things like that; the dumbing down of the sport. But that's okay, what do you expect when compacting all the ins and outs of a sport into a 2 1/2 hour movie. So for real fans of the sport, they'll find much of the story a little cringe worthy, but going in with the right mindset and you'll enjoy the action immensely. And i think the general public will enjoy it. Pitt remains one of the last great movie stars.
Elio has some moments. I found the final 20 minutes emotionally powerful. It's worth a look; it's not on the level of the earlier Pixar masterpieces. But it's sweet and it's a pretty good movie. A couple sections brought the movie down considerably.
28 Years Later: My mind was racing through this. At times I felt it wasn't cutting it. Once Fiennes enters the picture, it becomes an entirely different animal; it becomes a really engrossing, surprising narrative. I just can't get behind Aaron Taylor Johnson. This guy doesn't really work for me. I've seen him in a few things now. NO. He was the same sort of creep he played in the Eggers film. Weak.
It would not surprise me if Fiennes got nominated for supporting. He's striking. Memorable. Comer and the kid were also tremendous in this film. Worth seeing. And that crazy ending....
