What did Matthew McConaughey do to turn his career around?

I used to think he was the worst actor ever. He must have done something around 2010 because ever since The Lincoln Lawyer his acting has been top notch.

I find this really interesting, and I have no idea how to explain something like this. Do any other similar examples come to mind? Usually it's the other way around...
