I'm not being dismissive - when I talked about whether home invasions would become common, I was talking about the type you described.

Most home invasions aren't done with semi-automatic weapons and bulletproof vests.

I'm finding it hard to find reliable statistics on home invasions.  The FBI doesn't separate them from burglaries or robberies.  Robberies are down 20% over the last 5 years, burglaries are up slightly over the past decade.  Insurance companies have some statistics, but being insurance companies they are more interested in property crimes than violence.  Anyway, more data would be useful.

I'm looking at defensivecarry.com now - I did a site search using google, which works OK.  There are some interesting forum members on that site but hey, it's the internet.  Very different views about whether an AR-15 is appropriate for home defense in the forum I read.  Some think it's great, others would prefer a handgun.  Interesting (for me) to see a diversity of views from gun owners, because we only get outrageous (from my perspective) positions from gun advocates on the news.

We rationalise "greater good" things every day.  As a society, America "accepts" over 30,000 deaths per year from traffic accident fatalities - three times as many as gun homicides.  Obviously cars are great and necessary for society and the economy to function.  But we accept the risks that having a car-based society involved, while at the same time we try to limit the number of people who are killed and injured in car accidents through regulation - traffic laws, licensing, drink driving laws, safety standards, seat belts, speed limits, and so on.  I have a similar perspective on guns - what level of gun violence is society willing to "accept"? And what can be done to minimise that # at the least cost to individuals?

I don't think that guns cause a sickness - but at the same time, not everyone has the positive community-based experiences that you had with guns when you were growing up.  Most people who drive a car have tens of hours of supervised practice behind a wheel with an instructor or a parent before they are allowed to drive on their own.  Is the same true of guns?  (I know training and safety programs exist

I'm cautious of the "society is sick" argument as well.  With the higher rate of American gun violence, it implies that American society is somehow sicker and more into violence than other comparable countries. No data, other my experiences living outside America, but I don't believe this is the case.

CNN: 5 people accidentally shot at 3 private gun shows. (where were the armed citizens to stop this!) Antibody Jan 21, 12:04

Um, did you bother to actually read the article? They all discharged *accidentally*. None of the incidents were a mass shooting. *facepalm* {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 21, 14:00

Are you suggesting that criminals do not obey gun laws? Surely that cannot be the case! {nm} Samuel_L_Bronkowitz Jan 22, 07:37

I'm saying "why make it so easy for criminals to ignore them?" {nm} RogerMore Jan 22, 07:41

Do you think it's really about manpower, or willpower? Gun ownership is popular in America, and few politicians want to be seen messing Roger More Jan 22, 11:26

I think that's a fair assessment - but an incredibly perverse outcome, when a big part of their power is from access to US-sourced guns. RogerMore Jan 22, 12:38
