Most citizens are not going to make criminals of themselves by buying illegal arms, no matter how much they

Posted by: edzep - Port Monkey! (a.k.a edzep) on Jan 22, 13:06 in response to RogerMore's post I think that's a fair assessment - but an incredibly...

disagree with a certain prohibition. Criminals will be happy to get their arms by any means. If Mexican gangs can't get their hans on American made product, then it will be Chinese or Russian made. I don't expect Mexican gangs to come under control of Mexican authorities. Their foothold is strong, their government is corrupt, their citizens defenseless (ahem). More likely, Mexico will become our neighboring, lawless Somalia.

So, we're mostly talking about making eeevil semi-automatic "assault rifles" illegal. Who could ever need such a weapon for self-defense? I've thought that, myself. But, I've been doing a lot of reading on forums like DefensiveCarry.com. Home invasion crews (and those same Mexican drug gangs, moving into the US) have become better armed, and more dangerous. Some have been wearing body armor, which makes handguns and even shotguns less effective for home-defense. The is when a semi-automatic "defense rifle" would be appropriate.

Remember: the police will not be there to help in your greatest time of need. Yeah, moving from high-risk areas would be a good idea. But, no place is entirely immune, and each person is ultimately responsible for the safety of himself, or for his/her family.

CNN: 5 people accidentally shot at 3 private gun shows. (where were the armed citizens to stop this!) Antibody Jan 21, 12:04

Um, did you bother to actually read the article? They all discharged *accidentally*. None of the incidents were a mass shooting. *facepalm* {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 21, 14:00

Whoosh. Sarcasm went over your head. {nm} Antibody Jan 21, 14:49

We really need a sarcasm font then. {nm} accountant_4_Jesus Jan 21, 15:04

Chicago has some of the strictest laws against handguns in America. Samuel_L_Bronkowitz Jan 22, 03:28

Isn't Chicago right next to, say, Indiana - which doesn't? It's not as though Chicago is in a vacuum. {nm} RogerMore Jan 22, 07:02

Are you suggesting that criminals do not obey gun laws? Surely that cannot be the case! {nm} Samuel_L_Bronkowitz Jan 22, 07:37

I'm saying "why make it so easy for criminals to ignore them?" {nm} RogerMore Jan 22, 07:41

Joe "I love being president" Biden says we don't have the manpower to enforce the gun laws we have now. Samuel_L_Bronkowitz Jan 22, 10:19

Do you think it's really about manpower, or willpower? Gun ownership is popular in America, and few politicians want to be seen messing Roger More Jan 22, 11:26

Isn't the USA right next to Mexico? We can't/won't even control our own border, much less passage of weapons. {nm} edzep - Port Monkey! Jan 22, 10:07

The US/Mexico weapons traffic goes the other way. {nm} Roger More Jan 22, 11:09

For now, maybe. But, Mexican drug gangs are a force to be reconed with. If there's a criminal market in the US for what may become illegal edzep - Port Monkey! Jan 22, 11:45

I think that's a fair assessment - but an incredibly perverse outcome, when a big part of their power is from access to US-sourced guns. RogerMore Jan 22, 12:38

Hmmm... you are probably right about how ordinary people and criminal gangs will respond. I am more optimistic than you about whether RogerMore Jan 22, 14:01

Home invasion IS a growing threat. edzep - Port Monkey! Jan 22, 14:32

I'm not being dismissive - when I talked about whether home invasions would become common, I was talking about the type you described. RogerMore Jan 22, 15:45

I was going to mention the varitey of characters on that site... edzep - Port Monkey! Jan 22, 16:16
